The Davenport North American Open was one of the top ten PSA (Professional Squash Association) events in the world and attracted the top 25 players.
Professional squash in the glass box is an exciting event to watch. However, our audience hardly knew the sport or the players and Richmond was not a major professional sports audience. But the show must go on.
The idea of the top 25 professional athletes all playing in one place is all that was needed. One image that could be used as an ad idea and build all the tournament graphics around. "32 of the world's best all in one place" became the cornerstone for the North American Open.
The poster was printed 18" x 24" and sold at the tournament. It became the cover of the program and was printed as an 8 x 10 foot banner for the event. The players loved it and grabbed most of the posters and took them home. The winner, Ramy Ashour, asked if he could have the 8' X 10' banner for his club. After the tournament the major magazine for the sport, Squash Magazine, interviewed me and ran an article about the posters. That set off a world wide demand for the posters and squash clubs around the world wanted to reproduce it on the club walls. The image of the world's best playing in one place became the iconic image for one professional squash tournament in the world.
